Practical Pistol Event & Rifle Range.

Here are some recent pictures of our local practical pistol event.  Also, I included pictures of our new 1000 yard rifle range.  The talented members built it.  I accuse them of making it a second home...in case they need one because of all the time they spend here!

Handguns are usually major caliber (anything above 9mm).

Rifles are .223, 30'06, or .308.  Some 'wildcats' show up, but the emphasis is on "practical".

horizontal rule

Shooter at the ready.

Surrender position is the start. Targets are full size, about 10-15 yds for this event.

Weak hand shooting.

There are 'no shoot' targets, as well as partially covered targets.

Making ready.

Firearms are charged at the shooting line.

Critique by your peers. Would you trust these guys?

Weak shooting.

Center man holds a timer in his right hand.

Reloading for the next stage.

45 ACP or 40 S&W is major caliber, 9mm or less is minor, major is scored higher for peripheral hits.

Modified Weaver Stance.

Two hand shooting in the Weaver Stance is standard. Single hand shooting is simply a stress or simulation factor.

Shooter ready?

The timer counts the shots and stops the time. It also knows if you shot after the allotted time.

Strong Hand shooting.

Usually the shooter must draw from concealment, which was not part of this day's shooting.

Rifle House.

All the comforts of home.

Shooting benches.

2 right handed, 1 left handed. The orange painted boiler plate man sized targets hang from chains.

Keith spots the shots.

The stove allows year 'round shooting.

Through the window.

The shutters are opened to allow shooting.

Shooting benches.

The shooting benches and all the facilities were made by the talented members.

The range.

1000 yds across the valley. The man sized boiler plate targets "ring" when hit. 18" plates at all distances.

1000 yds.

Targets at 300, 500, 600, 800, and 1000. Right of the tree is 300, above and left of tree is the 1000 yd targets.

Spotter Keith.

Even with a telescope, 1000 yds is a long way off. We only hit at 800 today, but scoped M-1A does the 1000 regularly.

Rifle House entrance.

New deck is for prone shooting.

Rifle House.

Metal siding, full insulation, built up on stilts.

Rifle House.

Passive solar lighting, as well as heating. Also, solar electrical panels.

Rifle House.

The 'dutch doors' open to allow shooting. Hooks hold them in place.

Tom leaves.

"A shooter is a shooter". He is one.

Through the door.

I used an M-1 Garand in 30'06 & an FN in .308, but nobody took my picture. The M-1 hit the 800 yd. clanger easily.

Clanging.

Observers and shooters. Using ear protection, it can be hard to hear the 'clang' of a hit on the boiler plate.

Benching the .223.

Nick draws a bead at 300 yds. Keith watches for the hit.

'Reaching' the .223.

Nick draws a bead at 500 yds. A distance for a .223 Remington.

Playing the cross wind.

Bipod and scope help the CAR-15 reach the distance.
