Paeonia suffruticosa come from China, Tibet and Bhutan. Word has it that centuries ago the Japanese took Chinese tree peonies back to Japan. There they hybridized them. The Japanese tree peonies are supposedly smaller in plant size. They are generally larger in my garden, but the Chinese ones are not 20 years old. I find them and the American hybrid to be my most favorite flower. Bloom time is short. Bloom is done now. These will have to do until next year.
