Intersectional or Itoh Hybrid peonies are crosses between herbaceous peonies and tree peonies.  The growth is like a tree peony, as is the flower, but the stems are not as woody.  Like herbaceous peonies, you cut them down in the fall.  There are not many intersectionals available.  Yellow was the first predominant color, but breeders like Roger Anderson are changing that.  I have Garden Treasure (Hollingsworth) and Bartzella (Roger Anderson), and three other new ones.  The three new had a tough winter...they are usually bigger plants than shown here.  First Arrival is from Warren's yard.  I would have to say Bartzella is my all time favorite peony...if I had to pick ONE!

In 2002 I won the Grand Champion, Best In Show ribbon at the 97th Annual Convention and Exhibition of the American Peony Society with Bartzella.
