Well, we did the Durango Hut to Hut, and then thought we should do the Telluride one. Actually backwards, as the Telluride ride is billed as easier. And it is. The ride is a lot older, and so are the accommodations. The Durango route being new, also has new huts.
The ride follows a large plateau most of the way before the climb out in the La Sal Mountains. Of course there are elevation gains, but it is not like the Durango route. The first day's hut is spectacular, and takes some doing to find the hut and get up there. We were able to make each hut just after noon, which is good to beat the monsoons of August in the mountains. We even did some off road single track, which is not as easy as you might think with panniers. Basically, the whole route is on road, and better roads than the Durango route. Fun, yes, but not really 'off road'. I never felt as remote as on the Durango route, which also is on roads.
