Mountain biking the North Rim of the Grand Canyon with Rim Tours,
August of 2007.
I thought this would be close to the North Rim facilities of the Grand Canyon.
Boy was I wrong. After leaving
Jacob Lake, you
drive some distance until you get to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
This area is a considerable distance from the established facilities of the
North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It is actually almost opposite the Havasu Indian
Reservation, across the canyon on the South Rim. Because of the area's remoteness,
there are really no facilities other than campground sites. This is national
forest, so you can have campfires, and also ride the trails. Riding trails is
illegal in national parks. Being with Rim Tours, means that you are
self-contained. Since they cook for you, and have portable outhouse facilities,
you don't need anything else. The ride is still a camping ride, and you do need
to put up your own tent. I might mention, that the tents, sleeping gear and
really everything you need, can be rented from Rim Tours.
All of the riding on the North Rim is singletrack riding. The views are
spectacular, and the trails are intermediate, but nonetheless challenging. I
thoroughly enjoyed riding in this location. The remoteness is also enjoyable. We
only saw a couple of campers during the entire time we were there.
Rim tours stages out of St. George Utah for this trip. You have to drive some distance because
of the remoteness, to reach the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. And, if you
didn't know, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is much higher than the South
Rim. The North Rim is on the Colorado Plateau, and the elevation is over 8000
feet. This is a ride you want to do in the summer, because it does not get too
hot there. Also, it is a ride that you would want to do when it is not raining.
The only bad thing about riding there, are the myriads of small bushlike locust
trees which grow along the trail. These all have thorns in them. They either can
puncture your tires or puncture your legs, or a combination of both.
